Yandaran field trips 27th July

Ey! Today I’ve really been a farm girl! Finally!
Started of with a visit to the sugar canes. There are a million fields around us here and this is the plant where you make sugar from.

image

This is the seed. You use this only to plant new sugar canes.

image

The ones you actually harvest are without the top seeds. So you want to harvest them before the seed grows. Then again there might be a few different sorts of sugar canes.
They are pretty high and sort of remind me of corn fields but more compressed.

image

Went on a tractor ride to see how they cut them on the field.
A tractor with a double trailer on the back follows the harvest machine parallel. You’ve all seen a tractor but have you seen anything like this?

There are so many cutting things, spinning around simultaneously it is mad! Pretty cool to see this thing live 🙂

Thanks Gordy, Charlie and James for the rides!

First lesson of the day is done.
Now it was time to get my hands dirty. The Irish girls have now been here 3 months doing their farm work in a dairy farm. Tonight is their farewell party at the pub.
So me and Charlotte went to their place to see what they do and give them a hand. First they chased the cows in because it was milking time 🙂

image

image

This is the big tank which is filled up later.

image

The cows come in on both sides next to one another and from behind you place the suckers, yes that is their true name I asked, to their nipples.

image

image

image

Tada! First it is pumped in to this clear little tank and then the milk is transferred to the big one above.

image

image

These girls do a tremendous job! It really looks Luke a lot of fun, if only the house on the farm was nice too.

image

Some baby calves were curious what I was doing around them.

image

Left this place with a big smile. Felt like a little kid again!

Who has seen the movie Van the man? Well I now have met a dog with the same size of balls…..

image

Mad…….

Guess what….it’s Friday again and I need to wash off some of that cow shit. A lot of learning today. Time to get drunk…ehm…I mean partying!

Rainbow Beach 3rd July – watching the sunset

Yandaran 6-12 July…I thought…but still here 20th July

image

Here I am at the moment. What you can see is actually the pub and just a few metres to the right is the hotel where I’m staying.
Opposite from us is the Yandaran Store:

image

And people guess what? Now you’ve seen it all. This is the centre 🙂
I work at the local pub and by now I know all the locals already.
Work isn’t too hard. In the mornings we clean up and then we are done. Last week they needed a hand in the kitchen so I put my beer on the broken washing machine behind me and gave the kitchen my hands.

image

Every now and then some locals, or people who are at a camping area 20min from here, want to come over to the pub for lunch or dinner. We have a little bus so we can pick them up and drive them back. Or if one fella has had one beer too many we just give them a ride back home – mostly during the day.

We can also check at the pub if it is legal to drive or not, as we have a blowy thingy behind the bar. By the way – here the promille is 0.05. I had 0.09 three days ago and I’m happy I’m staying at the pub. I was in best or next best condition. As two people hit 0.2 haha.
Imagine how fun you can have with that little thing.

See Yandaran has a relaxing vibe. That is the reason why my originally week is turning in to 2 weeks today. And yet I don’t know when I’m leaving. Need I say that another bunch of nice, kind, easy and fun people are around me here too? No I thought so.

This is Bear, one of my hosts dogs. He is not big…he is massive! And cutest thing ever! His mummy Dusty is in the back..one hell of a mum to give birth to a pupp that turned out twice the size of herself!

image

image

I’ve been to my first footy game. That is Australian football. Me and the other girl who works here, Charlotte, took 12-year old Jared to his game and it was a really good game. Hard to try figuring out the rules while they are playing but I kind of got it now. Sort of..
Jared scored some points for his team and we were happy and he was pretty proud too!

image

Last week we had some MG-cruisers grabbing a beer. The first pic looks like Miami but it is still Yandaran.

image

image

A third girl came to work and stay with us for a week and we had some shitty weather that week but as soon as it cleared up I took me and her to the beach. We have a little car here which we can use. I asked for directions of how to get to the beach: do you remember when we picked up the family at the camping place and went to the road on the right? I reply: yes. Well just go left instead and it will take you to the beach. 🙂
One road gets you to Yandaran. If you continue on that road it splits left to the beach and right to the caravan park and camping area. Easy peasy!

Now this was a beautiful beach. Not many people know about it as you might’ve guessed already. Since the weather was shitty earlier we got to experience a spooky beach. Incredible scenery with all that mist we were surrounded with.

From the other side of the trees in the water

A little like Jurassic park…

image

There’s a river just behind the beach. So you are surrounded by water.

Not a dingo’s but just a perfect cute little footprint

image

image

Me…egw…moi….jag…. 🙂

image

image

Yes I might not look like it but i promise you I’m 28!

image

Me, me, me!

image

image

image

So i went to the beach yesterday again and now the weather is good again as you can see. Yay! And this time the tide was low.

image

image

Fridays are the days that the pub is filled up to be emptied of its liquids.

image

image

image

Read on the shelf. True so true!

image

image

image

So I’m not working behind the bar but if I would I might just expose myself a little tiny bit then if that would give me some catchiiing :p

image

Don’t worry…I’m still a good girl

Sis’ last time I had tequila was with you! And then now again

image

That night we all had a good night and a good nights sleep too

image

We have a mandarin tree in the back yard. And an avocado tree!

Time to hop into the shower…it’s Friday night again 😉

Fraser Island & Rainbow Beach 1-5 July

Clive was kind enough and drove me to Rainbow Beach.
There I met up with an old friend, Laura, who I first met in Katoomba, Blue Mountains and then again in Byron. We knew we were both going to Fraser and we said why not together. 🙂

image

All of us who were going to Fraser Island the next day had to meet up in the afternoon and watch an instructive video for security reasons. What to think of when driving a 4WD and what to think of when seeing a Dingo or two.
Also we just brought a smaller bag each to the island and left our big bags at the hostel in Rainbow Beach. The told us what to bring and everything very thoroughly, except that it’s very cold at night.

image

So we spent 3 days and 2 nights on the island. We had our camp on Aboriginal land which was really nice. We were supposed to camp but happy me met a Greek couple who showed me some beds and yes that’s where i slept. 🙂

image

Still outside as you can see, with a thicker mosquito net. And a bit more Dingo-safe :p

What did we do on the island then? We all got to drive, either on the beach or the inland roads. To be honest the inland roads looked pretty rough compared to a flat beach with some creeks you have to pass. I drove on inland roads. Just to clarify, the entire island is all sand. The roads are just a looot of sand basically. As this is the worlds largest sand island and thus also a world heritage. This might not look too rough but it was hard to take a clear picture when it is pretty bumpy all the time.

image

And when we drove on the beach it could look like this:

image

image

The places we’ve visited were Lake McKenzie;
a fresh water lake where the water is so fresh it not suitable for many species. An unexpected turquoise, blue and clear water color which you would not expect from a lake but maybe the Caribbean or Thailand.

image

image

Can you see where the water line is on the beach?

Tin Can Bay 25 Jun – 1 Jul

So in the last minute I made a request to work on a boat. The man could not host me but gave me a number to his friend. So I visited Clive in his 2 motor catamaran where he also lives.

image

image

Tin Can is a lovely little village where a lot of people live on their boats, go fishing, and have a simple life.
It is well known for the daily dolphin feeding. Two wild dolphins come every morning and so there are plenty of tourists every single morning in little Tin Can.

image

Didn’t really do much work. Clive and his friends were good company. Most of the days I just relaxed.

image

Brian took me sailing 🙂

image

image

Dave, who owned the boat I was ment to work at from start, he came over and we went to his boat and i drove the dingy 🙂
This is not a boat, this is a ship! 3 levels including the engine room. I’ve never seen an engine thaaat big. It was huge!

And this is Tin Can’s gang at Barnacles, the cafe we all hung at:

Just so you know I will still not have any reception on my phone. Moved after one week to another non-reception place. And I am not really sure when I will have it again. Maybe on the 6th.
